Por Larrañaga is known as the world’s oldest cigar brand in current production. The brand was introduced in 1834 by Ignacio Larrañaga, eventually gaining a reputation for fine quality by the end of the 19th century. Por Larrañaga is credited as the first brand to create machine-made cigars (introduced in 1925), which the once-ubiquitous brand was eventually relegated to offer almost entirely through the ’80s and ’90s. In 2002, Por Larrañaga started its comeback, switching to hand-rolled cigars entirely, using leaves of Cuba’s most premium region (Vuelta Abajo).
Por Larrañaga’s updated lineup now consists of four vitolas (including the introduction of the Picadores size in 2014), with the Petit Coronas being the only pre-revolution size. The cigars are offered in slide lid boxes of 50 and are Cuba’s most sought-after petit corona, with the size reportedly being discontinued. The cigars offer a mild profile, focusing on delicate complexities over strength and body. Flavors are often described as chamomile tea-like, honey, sweet butter, nutmeg, vanilla, and cream.
