In November of 2015, Altadis USA announced they would begin to introduce a new, proprietary tobacco into select releases, which were classified as TBA. Then, in January of 2016, the first product containing the new tobacco was announced—Yargüera H. Upmann.
Yargüera shares the name of the cigar, the tobacco variety, and the region from which it is grown. Story goes:
In the 1960’s, the Arias Family traveled to Cuba in search of an exquisite tobacco seed. Brought back to their homeland, Honduras, the Arias family cultivated the sweet-tasting and aromatic tobacco for decades, though it was a delicate and challenging crop.
Altadis' agronomists (Grupo de Maestros) then spent years developing the seeds to take on the heartier qualities of Criollo '98 (a hybrid seed itself). The new Yargüera hybrid seeds were completed by 2013, which were then planted in the Arias family's Yargüera estate and eventually used for the first time in the Yargüera H. Upmann (incorporated in the wrapper and filler).
