Fuente Fuente OpusX 20 Years Celebration
When the original Fuente Fuente OpusX cigars hit the market in late 1995, they were an absolute game-changer in the world of premium cigars; achieving the “impossible” notion of crafting a true Dominican puro, the likes of their Cuban counterparts. This was achieved by an aspiring Carlos Fuente Jr., using the Fuente family’s Chateau de la Fuente to introduce the world to a unique smoking experience.
Of course, the rest is history, and the OpusX is now among the world’s most highly respected cigars—representing the epitome of a Dominican smoking experience. And following the tradition of commemorative releases, as near-any cigar manufacturer indulges, the Fuentes planned a special release to celebrate twenty years since the OpusX’s launch.
The end result has been dubbed “Fuente Fuente OpusX 20 Years Celebration”, featuring a new/tweaked blend and specially designed packaging. Although, as the Fuentes will often admit, quality takes patience, and the cigars ultimately hit the market a year late—arriving on retail shelves in December, 2016 (21 years and 1 month after the original release).
Fuente Fuente OpusX 20 Years Celebration is set apart by its striking “X” band, which has been altered to a blue color scheme, shifting from Fuente’s famous use of red throughout their lineup. The cigar’s feature a matching sub-band to distinguish the occasion and are wrapped in cedar sleeves for aging. Packaging follows suit, with intricate and glossy blue, white, and gold displays that contain 20 cigars (four sizes have been rolled). The blend remains mostly undisclosed, although Carlos divulges that the iconic Dominican Shade-Grown wrapper has been selected from the third priming, as opposed to the upper (stronger) priming used for the original OpusX. Other changes have also been made in the cigar’s filler, with tobaccos harvested from a different Fuente farm than usual.
