The legendary Fuente Fuente OpusX by Arturo Fuente was first released in 1995, during the peak of the great cigar boom of the '90s. The blend is the brainchild of Carlos "Carlito" P. Fuente, Jr., where he ventured into new territory by growing the first successful Cuban-seed, shade-grown Dominican wrapper tobacco. The cigar has been hailed as the first-ever true Dominican puro, using tobaccos grown on the Fuente's own farms (including the famed Chateau de la Fuente location) throughout the Dominican Republic.
In the years following the monumental OpusX release, the Fuente family has showcased countless tweaks and blend variations, but the core lineup of true OpusX cigars is limited to roughly 16 vitolas. These cigars continue to be rolled in small batches and are often available only at select retailers (with some sizes being more rare than others). Because of the limited nature of OpusX, the (surprisingly) reasonable suggested retail prices (ranging from roughly $8 to $30) are often hard to come by, with most retailers increasing prices, some ranging into the hundreds and upwards.
